Description

Stormbrigner-David under the rain

Ok… there are some very long stories to tell about this painting.

1, the subject: it is base on a scenario I worked for the longest time with Greg M. Guity, whom I conceder a friend by now, great story, but we never follow through because… well basically… I’m lazy! So I won’t get into the detail of this extremely huge story here.

2- The way I got back into paining: Strangely, I always felt that my art as an illustrator had to be separated from the Art (painting, sculpture ext). I could give you some theory of why I use to feel that way, and how I got brainwashed as a college kid. How I ended up thinking that Comic was a lesser art form ext. the truth is… I don’t know for sure. Still, I like painting, but always felt that it was meant to accomplish bigger things then my comic work. So I ended up never knowing what to paint, and what to say.

Lately, I’ve been fortunate enough to work on a website for a new TV show that present artists from Quebec and let them explain their work. It’s a small show, very simple that may take it self a bit too seriously for my personal taste but… working on it I had to familiarise my self with its material. And one artist in particular impressed me. ( can’t remember his name right now ) in 2 simple phrase he made me realise that I was going the wrong way about all of this, how me thinking of my work as an illustrator as lesser the art was just wrong!

He said: “A” that you cannot create your self a new “imaginaire” just like that… it has to come from within. And “B” that as an artist, you can not lie! You cannot lie about your self, and you cannot to your self. Other wise you will simply loose your whole life!

Hearing that just made me realise, that my work as a comic illustrator was my own “imaginaire”. That this was my own voice and for me the way to go. I also had to admit to my self tho, that I never really liked drawing comic book. That this damn process take way to long for me to keep the interest going. Never did, never will.

But this is a good thing as you can see here, cause, weirdly, it is still a huge part of me. And I finally manage to integrate it in my painting.

I plan on keep creating stories, and interesting scene and comic pages, but then, only chose the greatest panels , cells or sequences and translate them into painting. And in a way continue to tell the stories but in a different form.

For now, I’ll have to take a break, because I have to pack my gear cause I’m moving to a new place in a few weeks, but I can’t wait for the next piece!

I really like this one, even if I kinda lost it in the end adding the rain on the fore ground! But hey… it’s a first try.. and a lot more are in planning!

Hope you guys dig it!
